maybe i am a music snob after all
<rant>
spoke to steve today about songs to play at a school dance. i was at a loss for words trying to come up with songs i liked, but that the kids would like too. i know their tastes are too groomed towards the mainstream at this point that it wouldn’t makes sense to introduce them to more “grown up” dance-able and lounge-able music.
maybe it’s because i hear it everyday at work. i don’t understand why anyone would request a song that’s already in high rotation. b. spears’ circus? really? you’re requesting that 5 minutes after it was played? virgin radio USED to be cool. if you check the site, you can see that every top 40 song is played AT LEAST 4 times during prime periods. that’s almost 8 times a day.
it sucks how radio used to promote new and unknown music. but now, it’s the same old shit across all stations. if the store had good reception, the radio would be on the jazz station in a heartbeat.
back to high rotation “music.” the sad part is, they play that tripe in clubs. ok. the regular clubs populated by the common denominator. which furthers the acceptance of mediocrity and the dumbing down of music. it boggles the mind at how something so manufactured like ‘let it rock’ can stay on the charts.
maybe i’ve become biased thanks to my own musical preferences, which was influenced by watching my cousin spin and myself starting to spin. i also gravitate and cater to that particular crowd. playing something like ‘so what’ or ‘right round’ would get you booed off stage with a punch to the face for good measure. if i ever play those songs, you have permission to kick me in the shins.
the fact that working 9 hour shifts with the same 10 songs playing continuously is getting to me. i think i need to cut the speaker wires. i’d rather work in silence.
